Abstract:In this presentation I will discuss the current TB epidemic, including the development of multidrug resistance, and efforts to produce new innovative vaccines. I will describe the pipeline from animal models, which are teaching us new information about the immunopathology of the disease process and the host response to the bacterium, through to new clinical trials. I will briefly review the new vaccine types under development, which range from recombinant forms of the BCG vaccine, to auxotrophic vaccines, and subunit vaccines, as well as briefly discussing the development of potential therapeutic vaccines.
