RESEARCH INTEREST:Cancer cells could predominantly produce energy by glycolysis even in the presence of oxygen. This alternative metabolic characteristic is known as the “Warburg Effect.” Although the exact mechanisms underlying the Warburg effect are unclear, recent progress indicates that energy metabolism pathway of cancer cells could be a critical target for drug discovery. The major research focus in my lab is to discover anticancer compounds from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by targeting cancer cells’ characteristic Warburg Effect. In order to achieve this goal, we are actively engaged in screening TCM for anticancer activity by investigating a number of onco-proteins and tumor suppressors, including the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, Myc, hypoxia-inducible factor and p53, which are involved in the regulation of the metabolic adaptation.
